Before the commercial introduction of concrete, cut stone was used exclusively to create prestigious structures such as large churches, public buildings and stately homes meant to stand for centuries.

Farming with Dynamite documents more than 30 stone quarries dotted across the northern third of Schoharie County’s limestone belt. The largest quarry, near Barnerville, employed nearly 450 men to fulfill a huge contract with the City of New York, worth about $65 million today.

The self-published book had a small press run, so supplies are limited. Details are available by email through www.howecavernstales.com. The price is $12.95 plus 8% sales tax and shipping.
